The Fox Hotel – reasonably priced, yummy food

Again, it is often the music that makes or breaks my experience of an excursion out into the world of hospitality. I am at the Fox Hotel in Collingwood. Tonight I chose this pub over two others nearby me because of the menu. I love Dr Morse for coffee and drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), but the Fox Hotel has the best menu on offer in my local area, in my opinion.

They have pub classics and that might be fine if that is what you are into but what gets me is their vegetarian options. I would still prefer to eat vegetarian if something is appetising on offer, and the Fox Hotel has options that make it easy to choose vegetarian over meat.

Tonight I had a mushroom pie with mashed potato, broccolini and some kind of Indian pastry triangle topped with goat’s cheese. It was delicious! And I felt like I had ordered well.

Ambience

The atmosphere here is nice. I am upstairs sitting in the rooftop garden. They have an outdoor courtyard, some dark and moody seating in the dining room and some stool seating in the bar.
In the past, I have felt a kind of melancholy when eating in some of these spaces. Maybe it is the energy of the location, or maybe it is the music. Maybe there is something about this space that makes me feel a kind of existential loneliness. I am not sure. Upstairs seems to be the best pick, and I am willing to risk the melancholy for this yummy vegetarian meal.

I heard one song earlier that got me in the feels. I think that is the ambience they are going for. Nostalgic feels. It was an eighties song that I haven’t heard for ages but with all the feels that only an 80s song can bring.

The Fox Hotel was the first pub I ate in when I moved to Melbourne all those years ago. It has remained a desirable option in my local area, and their DJs on Saturday nights are so awesome. Also, they have some great LGBTQI events that I would like to check out sometime!
