22 Aug Thinking about walkability in the suburbs
Walking back from my night out (and oh so grateful for the generosity of friends), I reflected upon life in the suburbs of Thornbury and felt a little grateful for my city fringe abode.
As I was walking through the streets I pondered Thornbury and it felt like it would be so dark out there, and so lonely. I guess it didn’t really feel that way when I was there, because I had Molly and Digby and all the creature comforts, but that is the sense that I get from where I am sitting now.
Also, I have found that the biggest difference between country living and city living is the sheer volume of steps that can happen in the normal living of everyday life. Having dogs in a suburb so close to parkland would probably result in a similar number of steps every day perhaps. And there would be oodles of steps on the way out – to the tram or train. I guess I just like the density. Walking home through streets that are still lively on some level.
I think it would be tempting to ‘stay home’ more if I were in Thornbury, but I haven’t tried to live there for any enduring period of time. I am not sure. I might have surprised myself!
