27 Jul The Blue Trail – a daring adventure
The Blue Trail was very empowering and inspiring. The film followed the very daring adventure of an elderly woman whose daughter had tried to pack her off to ‘the colony’ in Brazil.
We wondered if ‘the colony’ is actually a real thing in Brazil, but one of my companions suggested that it could be a metaphor for ageing generally, where the elderly are stripped of their autonomy and power, sometimes by their children, or shipped off to nursing homes.
Tereza wasn’t having a bar of it. She escaped the capture and went on a grand adventure, meeting some incredibly interesting people along her way. Each person gave her something important in terms of knowledge. She was incredibly tenacious. The authorities repeatedly stopped her for her papers, that were then used to ask her daughter for permission, and she repeatedly evaded their grasp.
The snail with the blue ink seems to be a myth or part of the fantasy of the story, but its impact on the characters of the film wove a wonderful thread between each of them. And the tension, -the fear of losing everything, my goodness!
I felt there could be worse ways to spend the golden years than on a house boat, cruising along the Amazon River!
