Twisted Dessert Bar – an evening destination

Lately, I have been feeling like I want to get out in the evenings after dinner. I have been feeling antsy like I want to burn off some energy and find something stimulating to get amongst. The good thing about this lovely city is that even on a Monday night if I take a step outside my front door, the world is alive and buzzing.

Tonight, I definitely wanted to go for a walk, and an adventure feels like it needs a destination, so I decided to walk to Brunswick Street to get some dessert. The air was cool and fresh with the recently fallen rain, but it was not cold. And it was nice weather for a walk.

My first stop was Girls and Boys, as I remembered that they have vegan desserts, and they also have portions that are not so huge. I was thinking of a piece of raspberry sponge cake, but it turned out that they didn’t make hot drinks, and that felt like part of my desired experience. So, I walked across the road to another gelato shop, and when that didn’t tickle my fancy went back to Twisted Desserts.

I was worried about this decision because the last time I visited Twisted (just last week actually), I felt so sick for hours after eating what seemed to be an innocuous cherry crumble. I am not sure if it was the dairy ice cream, the gluten-free bakery goods, or the sugar, but it made me feel so ill.

I am STILL waiting to try the ever-popular pistachio tiramisu. They sell out every day, and I need to come one day in the afternoon perhaps, or early evening to nab a piece.

Tonight I pre-planned to order the lemon bread and butter pudding with meringue and asked for vegan ice cream.

It was an absolute visual feast when it arrived at my table, and I was so in awe of the talent and skill of this dessert chef. It was tasty too. There was just wayyyy too much of it for one person. I decided that I needed to find a special friend to bring with me to this dessert bar, and asked for a takeaway box for half of it. It really was a taste sensation. The meringue was so yummy with the lemon pudding and the ice cream matched the flavours perfectly.

And the best part is, that I don’t even feel sick tonight! I just sat with my pot of tea, caught up on some work items, and then enjoyed a lovely walk home through the backstreets of Fitzroy. There is something so incredibly lovely about this suburb, especially after dark and especially in the summer. A walk through it always feels like such a feast for the senses, and so I am so glad that I still live within walking distance of Fitzroy.

My adventure did make me think that I wish there were more after-dinner, non-alcohol-related destinations to go out to. But I think that is the thing with those lively spots like Brunswick Street. People are out and about and on the streets at night, so dessert bars are viable there.

I dream of a HEALTHY after-dinner destination with healthy desserts. Twisted Desserts are tasty, but I wouldn’t exactly call them healthy! Or a healthy dessert bar with tea and coffee!

A lovely evening, well spent.
