Max Richter – The Departure (and other beautiful songs)

Listening to Max Richter – The Departure and all the pinned songs on his profile reminds me of one cold Hobart evening at Dark Mofo in 2023. Max Richter was playing a concert at Dark Mofo. However he was also playing a special 8-hour show, at which participants would get into their pyjamas and their beds,.(The show started at 11 pm) and he would play his songs for a full eight hours until 7 a.m. the next morning. It sounded like a wonderful experience, and of course, sold out very quickly.

Perhaps his music will always make me think of that particular holiday to Hobart though, because on Saturday night at Dark Mofo, it must have been the 10th of June. We were eating dinner down near the Winter Feast location in Salamanca, and in the distance, I suddenly recognised a Max Richter song that was on high rotation on one of my playlists.

As we moved into the CBD of Hobart to explore some more exhibitions before taking my weary body home, we noticed that his music was being piped from loudspeakers throughout the CBD. And everywhere we walked, Max Richter’s beautiful music was filling the cold streets on that lovely winter night.

It was quite an experience. And after an hour or so, it finished, and I was left feeling a little lonely in Hobart’s city streets, without the music to keep us company.

Max Richter- The Departure might be the first Max Richter song that I loved, but the first I heard was Vladimir’s Blues. And it is such a lovely soundtrack to sleep, or that late-night creativity that can be the best form of company.

Max Richter feels like the perfect way to really let the evening glide out into the milky darkness, and can be a lovely soundtrack to late-night creativity as well!

Don’t forget about the Blue Supermoon tonight and tomorrow!!
