03 Jul Lunch and hot drink outings at Cafe Jour
What is a good day? Perhaps when you learned something?
I learned lots of things about my city today. It boggles belief that even after 10 years of living here, some of the most simple and straightforward adventures are yet to be found!
I went to Cafe Jour and Store today. It is next door to CIBI on Keele Street, so just a hop, step and a jump away from my place. It is a lunch and breakfast cafe, and I can imagine that it is a lovely place for a morning coffee. . . If my coffee dates weren’t already taken (or mostly), then I might go there for a morning coffee. . . It doesn’t really seem like the kind of place that I could go when I am feeling SO CRAP that I don’t even want to go to my corner store for coffee, , , but hey.
Explanation
I am not saying that in a BAD way. I am saying it because it is quite classy and while it would be lovely to go and sit in the sun on a sunny morning and have a coffee, it doesn’t feel like the sort of place I can rock up and be a bit out of sorts.
And speaking of the difficulty in remaining loyal to a particular cafe or coffee house, I had a bit of a bungle at Cafe Jour today. I had finished my very wonderfully priced quiche and side salad for $13. It felt like a reasonable price for a delicious lunch, and it was nice to sit inside the cosy cafe with its warmth and whitewashed brick walls.
When I was ready to pay, the barista/waiter was making a coffee, so there was a bit of a conflict in timing. I took the time to peruse the menu (it was rather interesting). On the counter the menu was a list of drinks. When the barista had finished preparing his drink, I kind of sensed that he wanted me to order a drink as well as my lunch.
It was a bit uncomfortable because I was just looking at the menu, I didn’t really WANT anything, but I felt obligated maybe, or the pressure was there. I asked about the orange juice, because my ‘inner voice’ had requested it as I left home. He said that it wasn’t so nice at the moment, because the oranges aren’t in season. He mentioned a green smoothie, which I got excited about, but it was filled with fruit not leaves.
I must say, I was impressed that he didn’t push a single thing on me. He was honest and upfront about all of his offerings. The integrity was inspiring.
A hot drink
I stupidly asked if they did matcha, which was a faux pas and I knew it, since I was planning to get a matcha at my corner shop on the way home, but then, I landed on the hot chocolate, because someone had ordered a pain au chocalat earlier, and I thought chocolate might be nice.
He made it for me in a takeaway cup, because I wasn’t SO silly to use my keep cup, and I drank most of it on the way home, and then put the cup in the bin. Then I went to my corner shop and ordered a soy matcha (because soy has more protein, perhaps), so all is well that ends well. . . and people seemed to be laughing about it, so that was good!
Learning things
All in all, it was a grand adventure. I have spoken more about my impressions of their delicious food here on My Health Zest, but my overall impression of Cafe Jour was that it is a lovely, lovely addition to my potential work from home lunch time spots!
