26 Apr Nahko – solo acoustic set
Last night was a difficult experience. We had bought tickets to see Nahko play an acoustic set at Second Story in Collingwood. When I first heard the music promoting his event I was all in. It sounded like something else!! 😮
And, listening to his music on Spotify a few times before the gig was very enriching.
When we got to the venue, we found some of the few seats available, and a friend of a friend proceeded to tell me about how Nahko had been accused of molesting minors and sexual assault.
As the night progressed, more information came out about this and we learned that it was the reason why his band ‘Medicine for the People’ had broken up. Someone found a statement from Nahko saying that he was sorry and admitting guilt. (Although saying that nothing illegal had transpired).
All of this caused one of my friends to simply leave the gig saying that she didn’t want to support someone who had done these things.
We left about half an hour before the end of the show. I admired my friend for taking a stand and was happy to support her in the decision to go.
It seems that Nahko has been ‘cancelled’ and with good reason. We couldn’t tell it from the packed room though. Perhaps lacking ticket sales was why the gig moved from the Northcote Social Club to Second Story. (Or their own gesture of solidarity)
Some of the music really spoke to me, and I feel so conflicted now, as I am sure many of his fans do. My friend was harsh, but I admire her for standing up for her values. And the music hits differently to me today. I don’t think I can enjoy it/listen to it any more.
