hunting for ambience and good food in Fitzroy

I am happy that I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc. It might be the first white wine I have had this summer. Or it certainly feels like the first reminder of summertime, which feels good, on this balmy evening in Fitzroy considering I haven’t exactly had the best summer!

My inner voice was committed to eating out tonight. Our first stop was Goldy’s to see what the special was. It was some weird schnitzel curry thing for St Patrick’s Day. So I kept moving.

i went to the Rose Hotel (first time!), but the ambience in there was not nice at all. Football, loud people and bleak seating options. They had something nice on their menu, but I decided to keep walking. The ambience is the main thing right?

I ended up on Brunswick St and found the offerings rather distasteful. There was a bar with something I wanted on their menu menu but it seemed like such a basic environment. I wasn’t sure about the quality of their food.

After walking and browsing on Brunswick St, and happening across a cocktail bar called the Black Cat (They don’t sell food, but it is a lovely spot and their drinks menu looks very nice).,I have found myself at the Rainbow Hotel. They have a beautiful beer garden and there are a number of free tables, plus no sport and a nice sounding stuffed chicken breast. Nicely done.

. . .

I walked home through the lovely Fitzroy streets and stopped for a bite of dessert on the way. I can’t help but notice that the streets I have called home for all these years seem to have changed their demographic. There is a much younger crowd out and about. And maybe it is just because it is a Saturday night, or maybe because the purpose of that section of Smith street has changed recently, whatever it is, it doesn’t feel like home anymore. I am not sure where the 40 something hipsters have got to!!
