29 Jan Addition at the Sun Theatre
Addition was a wonderfully sensitive, humorous and inspiring movie about a woman, Grace, with a mathematical form of OCD and the story of her romance with a British tradie.
it is an Australian film based on a book that was written in 2008 and filmed in 2022-23. That is how long film projects can take to come to light in some cases!
the story offered a lot of substance for people who live with mental illness and was particularly important from the point of view of a woman protagonist (and production crew) and the female gaze.
the author of the book the movie was based on is Toni Jordan and after the screening of the movie there was a Q and A with Toni and the producer Christina Pozzan at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville.
The audience loved it!
The friction of real life
i loved Grace’s character and she was wonderfully smart, sexy, funny and vulnerable. I wasn’t as convinced with the instant emotional connection/support offered to Grace by her love interest. Seamus was emotionally supportive from their first encounter. It didn’t seem so realistic to me. However, again it was refreshing to see this love story unfold from the point of view of the female gaze.
the film made me ponder on the power and grit of real life. It made me crave real human connection rather than all this energy that I have been investing in online connections.
it made me realise that nothing is really happening at all until it happens in real life.
it was also interesting to reflect on some of the challenges arising from dating as someone with a mental illness.
