22 Jan A regional town for motoring – Morwell
The truth be told – I am in Morwell in regional Victoria.
It is an interesting place. I chose to stay here because there was no accommodation available in Traralgon last night (although I have it on good authority that Traralgon has a better night life). . . I also got a good vibe from this town last time I came through on the train. . . so, , , I have bunkered down in a motel for the evening and will catch the train to meet the bus to get the rest of the way to my home this morning.
As I said – interesting. . . My first impression was just delight as I saw the urban design around the train station. It is a hospitable, friendly, accessible, organic and pleasant introduction to this wonderful place!
The town centre is located on both sides of the train tracks. Yesterday I headed west through the most southern part of the town centre and decided that I would stay the night if I could find somewhere for a drink and something to eat.
Government funding in progress
Morwell does not have many cafes or restaurants. It has a few but at 5 PM on a Wednesday evening there were none open that I could see. From talking to people who live here the main industry closed down years ago at the end of Jeff Kennet’s premiership and now this town has the ‘highest unemployment rate’ in Victoria (??). . .

I saw a sign from the Government near the Council offices (??) saying that the Government is devising ways to improve the economic health of Morwell and to increase the vibrancy of the town centre. . . I feel this is a tricky undertaking. . . You would need an industry that makes money, , , enough to pay a lot of people to have the disposable income to then go and buy things in shops that also need money to stay alive.
I saw a very vibrant Salvation Army shop on my way to my mother (xx( with some amazing clothes)), , , but i did not buy any because to be honest I don’t have any money myself and my suitcase is filled to the brim!!
