Rediscovering an old hobby

Tonight I feel like upping the anti a little. I feel like I want to be transported back to my world in Surry Hills, Sydney in the early 2000s, when the warm, tropical evenings were perfect for dancing to bleepy electronica all night, creating a scene in my colourful apartment on South Dowling Street, or going on a photography or videography adventure with my friends.

After pondering how to get transported back to that world, I realised that one of the most fun experiences I had during that time was making a music video to a little known song called Swamp Gas by the electronic duo Ubin. The video is on my YouTube channel, but it has become so grainy via a lack of resolution that I won’t post it here (or make it public).

What I might do instead is start to deconstruct it, in order to start thinking about how to make music videos again. I remember that I found the process so energising, and I think it might be a fun way to bring my 20s back into my world again and to flex my sense of rhythm with my love of music.

Tonight I found a couple of songs that have a licence I could use as the musical base of this kind of artwork, and I have been reflecting on how I made the original video. I particularly liked the way that I used the movement of my camera to capture some fluid clips exploring the shapes and textures of light sculptures at night. There is also a whole world of ideas coming into my head about the natural movements of people and objects that I could start to collect to make these kinds of videos.

In the video clip that I made I filmed people dancing both on the dance floor and with sparklers. I love the way that I synced the rhythms of their bodies to the important beats of the music. So much fun, , , and brings so much visual emphasis to the beats that really hit those emotional top notes.

Lately, I have been wanting to work out how to play with video in a live format as performance to music. I contacted someone from the coast who works in the space, but haven’t followed up because the video he shared with me about his set up had me gagging with the hard ‘tech’ composition of his set up. . . I don’t know if it is was just because I haven’t been writing enough or what it was, , , or is, , , because tech is such a hard kind of world to engage in. It literally feels like a cold and hard kind of brain activity. . . The fluidity of video is a whole different thing, so, perhaps I will start there.

It was fun to watch my video again tonight, even though I could barely see it. . . It reminded me of how much fun I was having back then. And now I have a brand new project!! I can start to explore my world through the lens of movement through a camera lens, and go for adventures to find light art that I can use for this hobby!!

Haha!! Now I am inspired to create a scene in my rather less colourful, but much more rational apartment. . . . I can feel me at 23 through the excitement in my heart. . . a scene!! Hooray. . . Gee, it was fun.
