Angry Squad – The Civil Servant and the Seven Swindlers + adventures in the city

Last night was fun. My friend had invited me out to a movie in the city. A Japanese comedy, which looked interesting. And we were to go to dinner at a Ramen bar beforehand.

The friend who had invited me to the movie was sadly unwell and said that she was going to stay home. I thought I would probably do the same, because I was feeling so weak from my women’s health, but some coffee must have revived me, because I decided that I would make the trip into the city and meet the peeps for dinner and the movie. . . I messaged them to say I would be a little late.

When I got to the Ramen bar (Mensho) on Russell Street, there was a man standing outside next to the tree. I had not met this person before, but I thought it might have been someone in our group and so I went over and introduced myself and we started chatting. There was only one other person coming for dinner, so after a while we decided to go in (no bookings – walk ins only). We sat upstairs for a while and chatted about shared interests in music, then realised that the other person might be later than we expected, and we didn’t want to aggravate the restaurant staff so we decided to go and get a drink while we waited for her. (The joy of meeting 2.5 hours before the movie – which I thought was crazy, but worked out in the end).

We found a nice cocktail bar on Bourke Street and chose two of their very unique (and pricey) cocktails. Mr Neurophysics is a very interesting person and I realised again how nice it is to connect with a cute man in the real world in a real conversation. He writes about Eastern philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, so we started to dig into those topics a bit. Until we realised that our third party was not coming to dinner, so went back to the Ramen bar and ate the most delicious noodle soups.

We got totally lost in conversation and then realised it was 7:20 PM and the movie started in 10 minutes. So, we hightailed it out of there and walked to the Kino on Collins Street. We got there just in time to see some of the Japanese previews and settled into our reclining seats to watch the movie.

Lolololol. It was so quirky. . . Very, very funny in places, and lots of twists and turns. . . The premise was that a civil servant working in the tax office in Tokyo gets unwittingly embroiled in the affairs of an evil local property developer who has avoided paying over 1 billion Yen in taxes. The civil servant was very sweet and had a lot of integrity. When he finds out that the property developer was the cause for the firing of his best friend, and this friend’s ultimate act of suicide, he takes up an offer from a local swindler to swindle the property developer out of a huge sum of money, to get him back. And get this. When they do so, he gives the money to the tax department as payment for taxes owed. . . Lololol.

It was so funny, and so much fun. The main swindler builds a team of seven swindlers and together they pull off a magnificent heist, which kept us guessing right up to the end.

Some of the comedy was a bit awkward at times, but the integrity and kindness of the main character shone through the film like a beacon. And the whole audience was laughing a lot throughout this crazy story.

It was such a lovely evening. 🙂
