the long way home

the long way home

The nice thing about travelling most places by public transport is there is the opportunity to ‘make a day of it’, and linger in a cafe or bar on the way home.

On Wednesday I sipped on exorbitantly priced mineral water at Brunetti’s Classico in Carlton. These portable computers sure do make for an enjoyable day out. And today I am at Laurent pondering how many grams of sugar I have consumed today.

I went with my elderly client to the pool this morning. It was a pleasant outing, and made me realise that this reticence I have where writing is concerned has not crossed over into verbal communication.

Maybe I love travelling by bus, tram or train so much because it reminds me of the intensely relaxing experience of being a passenger while driving through the bush so much as a child. I am not really sure what has created my intense love of travelling by public transport. However, when I am feeling decimated emotionally, the trundling motion of the 246 as it carries me home along Punt Road/Hoddle Street is very comforting. When I am happy it is simply such a rich sensory experience to travel by tram or bus.

The trains often make me feel like an adventure is afoot, but each mode has its own special qualities. I notice that most people have their noses buried in their phones on the commute. Not me. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to gaze out the window and watch the world go by.

It takes me a lot longer to get to and from my support shifts now, but I sure do enjoy the commutes.

Yesterday I hired a car that had been puckered all over by hail stones. It was a sports hatch, but it fit all my clients’ stock from her retail shift. And that was fun too. Listening to my Driving Playlist, gliding through the traffic. The satisfaction of side and rear mirrors.

Melbourne is a fun city to get around, no matter if walking, cycling, on PT or driving.
