Beetlejuice the Musical at the Regent Theatre

The plot of Beetlejuice the Musical was compelling, interesting and fun, despite the fact that I found the musical part of the production particularly cringeworthy.

The story was written by Scott Brown and Anthony King. It was a lot of fun, and kept us engaged throughout the 2 hour and 30 minute production. It made me want to see the 1988 movie again to understand how the story was adapted from the original plot. However, reading the plot of the original movie, it seems that this Broadway adaption was more interesting and perhaps a little less whacky and abstract than the original script.

Eddie Perfect composed the music for this show and wrote the lyrics. I found the songs very boring musically, and saccharine in their lyrics. From the outset I felt sure that I was going to hate this musical adaptation of Beetlejuice, but for the fact that the story became interesting, despite the toe-curlingly uncool musical part of the show.

Eddie Perfect also played Beetlejuice, which he did very well. And his songs were a little less cringe-inducing.

The sets, props and costumes were excellent. And the show did become a lot of fun, on a number of occasions, with so many actors on the stage creating a vibrant eruption of musical theatre.

The acting was also good across the board, although I did find the Maitland couple a little earnest at times.

I am happy that I saw it. But I can understand why it has had mixed reviews in some markets. And there is also a good reason why they are discounting so many tickets. It was a great show, but yes, a little cheesy in parts.
