29 Jul Annemieke Mein – Nature Revealed
The Annemieke Mein exhibition at Box Hill Artspace is exquisite. For more than 50 years, Annemieke has been making the most interesting textile art featuring Australian flora and fauna.
This exhibition features a selection of works loaned from the Gippsland Art Gallery Collection, the artist’s private collection and some pieces held in the Whitehorse Art Collection.
It is a fascinating collection of work, made with progressively more complex textile art methods, up until her last piece in 2021.
Hand and machine stitching on canvas over applique textiles and paint create the rich and fascinating works on exhibition at Box Hill.
The work is vibrant and sophisticated, and interestingly does not subscribe to the sometimes dated styles of fashion and art in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s.
Photos don’t do the work justice, as photography flattens the wonderful appliqué techniques that Annemieke has used to create texture and depth in her work. Machine and hand embroidery combined with exquisite metallic fabric paints make the flora and fauna so vibrant when viewed in person.
Throughout the exhibition were some boxes containing collections of artefacts that inspired and led to the development of her work.
Annemieke Mein was born in 1941 is still alive and living in Gippsland, Victoria. She has a well deserved OAM.
If you live in Melbourne or will be visiting before the 30th of August 2025, I would highly recommend this lovely exhibition.
