27 Oct Your Name Means Dream – Red Stitch
In a world where more and more of our human experience is mediated through technology in some way, there is something incredibly enriching about sitting in a theatre, watching two humans play out a dramatic story on a stage.
Interestingly the story of Your Name Means Dream was about the relationship between an elderly woman and her robot carer. To me, this was confusing, when what I enjoyed most about the play was watching dramatic ‘human’ interaction. In the flesh, not through a screen.
The story was interesting on a number of levels. It explored the psychology of the elderly woman and her relationships in New York. It also explored the development of emotional complexity and souls in robots. I found that part less interesting than the way Aislin became more dependent on her robot companion, and how the robot provided emotional support and companionship.
There was a great deal of humour in the play, and it was exceptionally entertaining to the very last moment.
Both actors were very talented, and both made the story come to life so brilliantly. The production was tight, and Jose Rivera’s story was skillfully brought to stage by the director Kat Henry.
It makes me realise that I need to make a point to see more theatre and to support local theatre in Melbourne.
Three cheers for Red Stitch!!
