a fun afternoon adventure – bring the HEAT

I was pondering what to do this afternoon, which would be a lot of fun. It hit me like a bus. ‘I could go to the gym’.

The gym has become a delightful experience since I discovered the sauna. And now that most of my days aren’t so jam-packed with those chunks of cooking shifts, the afternoon is often ripe with the possibility of making the trip.

If you have a sauna nearby, I would encourage you to try it. Particularly in a gym. I keep reading about more and more health benefits of saunas. This is particularly effective if you spend time in one after a workout.

The feeling after running, then weights then walking up a steep incline and then 2 x 10 minutes in the sauna (or 1 x 15), is so, so good. The evening becomes a blissful exercise in riding the wave.

I don’t care what people say about cardio after 40. I want to run and go into the sauna to exercise my heart and tone my cardiovascular system in general.

Delightful evenings

Stepping out of the sauna into the cool afternoon air is such a wonderful novelty to my senses. And when I am finished and dressed, stepping out into the green spaces around my gym feels like a wonderfully relaxing glide.

I have read that regular saunas help us to acclimatise to the summer heat. So, that will certainly come in handy if, as the BOM predicts we have a hot summer this year.

I dream that the awesome benefits of the sauna will be enough to motivate me to maintain this habit. And if there is time to do this, and nothing gets too out of whack, perhaps it will become a habit!

What else?

My muscles ache, which is probably a good sign. And I am not so keen on the idea of a drink of alcohol. The beautiful sunshine is bright and warm on the trees outside my home.

The only question is what other fun can I squeeze out of this day!?
