21 Aug Grace Jones and Studio 54 inspiration for history and musical culture
How VERY interesting!!
Grace Jones…
I am not so familiar with Grace’s music. . . in fact, I am not sure I have ever heard it before!
This morning (Aus time), Andrew Armstrong from Daddy Squad posted a story about Studio 54…
What was Studio 54?
It was a New York nightclub that opened in 1977!! Sounds like quite an interesting clique! Reading about it reminded me of the only nightclub community I have ever been a part of – Club 77 in Darlinghurst, Sydney in the late 90s -early 2000s. It was a LGBTQIA nightclub that was legendary throughout various subcultures in Sydney.
Interestingly, it was at Club 77 that I met Andrew Armstrong in person on a couple of different occasions. It was such a wild space. The attire was sensational, (a little more edgy than the Studio 54 inspo perhaps?) and the music was so awesome!!! I loved that late 90s, early 2000s electronica that the most unusual bands and acts would play at Club 77. . . It was a regular Thursday night outing for me and my university friends, and then later with me and my ‘cool’ Surry Hills friends.
It sounds like Studio 54 was a ‘gay club’ as well!
I digress. . . I am listening to Grace Jones, and I am recognising quite a few of her tunes. . . They are very lovely to listen to. . . Interesting!
And so many samples that I recognise from later songs. . . (More on that later!)
Who was Grace Jones?
Such an interesting person! When I first saw that she has a song called ‘I need a man’, it reminded me of the Eurythmics song I Need a Man, which does not seem to be musically derived from Grace’s song.
Grace Jones’ own website provides a little more history about her life and musical career. I am excited to be able to follow Grace on Instagram!!
How very glamorous is Slave to the Rhythm! (I can empathise!!)
Grace Jones’ legendary parties
This was the part of Andrew’s story that got me thinking about the history lesson, I think, , , because I listened to Freak Out (the title is Le Freak and it reminded me of an artist I have been listening to lately!
I think that bbno$ sampled Le Freak for his song lil’ freak,,, or at least that is what I remembered this morning when I saw Andrew’s story.
Thank goodness I got that sample right!! Woulda been a bit embarrassing if I had mistaken it!
I like bbno$’s song a little less having heard the original, , , but I still think that bbno$ is a very interesting artist and one that gives me a great deal of listening pleasure.
