28 Apr Robot Dreams – lovable characters and emotional depth
I heard about Robot Dreams because it was nominated for an Oscar award earlier this year, It did not win an Oscar, but it has won many awards. And it is not hard to understand why!
The animated film is set in New York City. The characters – DOG, ROBOT, DUCK etc are mostly non-verbal, and yet the action of the film is so engaging that it doesn’t drag. The plotline centres around DOG, who buys a ‘make your own’ ROBOT from a television ad in an attempt to assuage his loneliness. Things go very well for the pair for some time, until they take a trip to the beach, and something happens to separate them.
From there, their stories take different paths, but the hope is that they will find each other again.
It is a beautiful movie.
I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by it, but it is brilliantly done. (And no wonder that it has won, or been nominated for so many awards).
The characters are so lovable. And it was so clear how cold and cruel the world can be, through their stories. One review said that the film conveyed how it can feel to live alone in New York. The film certainly has a lot of emotional depth and range. I came away feeling like I wanted to weep. But it also made me feel stronger too.
