27 Dec Triple J Hottest 100 2023 – shortlist in progress
One nice thing that I have been doing during the Chrimbo break is building my 2023 Hottest 100 voting card. A friend asked me yesterday (on Boxing Day) if I had voted yet. It seemed like such a perfect thing to do in a couple of hours on my day off (the best day of the year my Mum says, hehe. I have somehow inherited her dislike for Christmas and all the work, energy and effort that needs to go into it, after a long year). And so, I got busy with it!
But it is a work in progress because I am not done with the music of 2023 as yet! I have created a shortlist and a tentative top 10, but I feel like I will keep adding to this and adjusting until voting closes. This is my working list so far.
The actual vote card is a little harder to finalise. I feel like I know what my number 1 vote will be. But do I vote on strategy – voting in some of the smaller, Australian acts rather than the big-name US numbers who are sure to rank high, just to try and get some of those smaller acts across the line? Or do I do as they would in local government and vote according to each song on its merits?
Triple J – it is pretty special!
It is all good fun though. I have been enjoying listening to Triple J more this year during my trips to and from support client jobs. And now, during the summer programming break, there are still songs that I get reminded about every day!
What I love most about the Triple J Hottest 100 is that I consider it a bit of a test of my musical literacy for the year. Some years I know lots of the songs on the contender list, some years I have known barely any. This year has been pretty good, but I admit there are quite a few on the list that I love, but don’t recognise because I haven’t consciously remembered the name of the artist or the song.
Have you voted yet? Let me know when you get involved!

One of the Triple J listeners won the competition to create the artwork for the Hottest 100 this year. It was designed by: x (They don’t credit the artist on the website – and I feel they should!!) So good!
** Just heard during the countdown that the artist is Nat Welsh. I bought a T-shirt earlier today. They look awesome. And such a great cause 🙂
