30 Sep Wanderer Festival 2023 – day one
The Wanderer Festival is definitely a nice happening for the Sapphire Coast. It makes me think of all those years that I would dream of something like this when I was living in Merimbula. Simon Daley, the chief Wanderer, was responsible for the Falls Festivals, so he has years of experience in pulling something like this off. And it is nice. A great start to the summer party season, I think.
We made it to the festival in time to see the last half of CW Stoneking’s set, but he wasn’t on stage, (We think Robyn Martin was playing). And he never showed. It was disappointing, but we stuck around for Lisa Mitchell and she was lovely – folk kind of pop.
Son Little was not as fun as I was expecting, and we thought it was a bit of an odd choice for the sunset set. It was all very chill. We spent time dreaming about the energy of a festival at sunset. My friend was telling me of some of the uplifting sunset sets she had seen over the years. Maybe Saturday and Sunday will be more energetic. But it does seem to be the vibe of this iteration of the Wanderer Festival in general. It is chill. And I feel like the music is the kind of vibe that would appeal to the local audience. There is lots of space on the site and lots of room to explore and the backdrop is beautiful.
Lots of Aussie music
The other impressive part of this festival is the mostly Australian line-up. It is inspiring. As a Triple J listener, I am aware of many of the acts.
Although we didn’t want to stay out in the cold (my friend has a nasty cough, and another didn’t make it due to breaking her arm :-/), we did catch Thelma Plum. She was so gorgeous. The music was wonderful, and she has such a beautiful voice. It was lovely.
The first day of the Wanderer Festival was a good vibe. They have good food, reasonably priced drinks and an extensive menu of drinks, and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. It seems to be a festival for all ages, with a nice range of age groups, and the grass is so green! It is spectacular!
