01 Mar A holiday in Sydney – Potts Point
Sydney is a nice city, I think. I was lucky enough to be staying in Potts Point for the five days I stayed in Sydney after the trade fair. The Airbnb apartment wasn’t the Hilton, but it was the absolute best location, and the view from the balcony outside my room was amazing.
Each morning I would step out and go out for coffee (sometimes for breakfast). My favourite cafe was Orwells. There are lots of other cafes around Potts Point, but their coffee was a little insipid compared to Orwells. I kept coming back there, and finally ate there this morning, with Miso scrambled eggs and a side of mushrooms. It was quite delicious.
I was surprised at just how much Sydney grabbed me and inspired me with beauty, new, creative ideas and delighted me. I guess the last time I was there was last February, and I was on the tail end of a kind of psychosis. And while Sydney helped to kick me out of that, it wasn’t my favourite.
This time, I went to Bondi Beach, I went to Surry Hills and Redfern, I went to Rushcutters Bay and Elizabeth Bay, I walked through Wooloomoloo and did some work in the Botanic Gardens with a view of the Opera House, I went to Circular Quay, I went to Newtown and finally I went to Wollongong for the day.
I felt like I saw so much of that beautiful city over the five days I was there, and each place delighted me in different ways.
I also had quite a lot of very creative brainstorming sessions. I think sometimes a holiday can be just what the creative juices need. The right book, at the right time and I developed all sorts of interesting plans and ideas.
So many places and people were my favourite. There is something about OLD friends and the way we have an emotional and linguistic shorthand. It was so good to catch up.
