07 Mar The Manganiyar Seduction – State Theatre
One particular word comes to mind when I think of tonight’s performance of the Manganiyar Seduction at the State Theatre and that is ‘stunning’. I think it is true what people say about it – that it is some kind of spiritual experience. It was like the most satisfying and entertaining of advent calendars. A musical advent calendar! Hehe.
The music reminded me a lot of an artist that I used to listen to a lot in my early twenties – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Det would have loved this performance tonight. If Nusrat introduced Qawaali music to the world, then this group of artists perfect it.
If that is the kind of music, they were playing and singing then maybe they were singing in Urdu. It makes me want to learn more about Indian culture.
I will include a link to one of my favourite Nusrat songs, but this wasn’t just about the music. It was such a visual feast of light and texture. I absolutely loved it!
